Synopsis

224 patients with femoral shaft fractures were randomized to undergo intramedullary nailing with or without reaming of the canal. The two groups were comparable with regard to the measured patient and injury characteristics. Patients were followed every 6 weeks until union was achieved or a diagnosis of nonunion was made.
